How it's calculated
Annual cost = miles per year ÷ MPG × price per gallon. The EPA's combined rating assumes 55% city and 45% highway driving. If most of your miles are on the highway, a car's highway rating is the better number to use.

How much does it cost to drive 15,000 miles a year?
At 28 MPG and $3.10/gal, about $1661 a year. Every extra 5 MPG saves roughly 15% at that level.
How do I calculate cost per mile?
Divide the price of a gallon by the car's MPG. At $3.10/gal and 30 MPG that's about 10.3 cents per mile.
Does premium gas make a difference?
Only use it if the manufacturer requires or recommends it. At about $0.85/gal more, premium adds around 27% to fuel costs.
